Scope of Eligibility

Description
Under direction of a supervisor, in a state department or agency, assists in the operation and maintenance of various types of boats assigned to the unit; does related work as required.


Specific to the Position
Learns to assist in the marking and maintenance of the state's coastal waters, inland waterways, and lakes. Makes minor repairs and adjustments to flashing beacons. Performs maintenance work on channel marking equipment and materials. Makes minor repairs to gasoline and diesel engines on state-owned boats; adjusts and services the boat and its motor; cleans or replaces the points and plugs; cleans and adjusts filters and strainers, charges the batteries, greases, and oils movable parts. Operates hoisting gear to lift heavy objects and placement, removal, and maintenance of navigation aids. Assists in the proper storage of boats and equipment. Assists in the operation of patrol and work boats of varied sizes. Stores fuel; uses and stores life preservers, fire extinguishers, and flares; handles and stores lines (ropes) and anchors. Cleans and ventilates bilges. Prepares basic reports.

Preferred Skill Set
Knowledge of the operation, servicing, cleaning, and maintenance of patrol boats and motors.
• Ability to learn to assist in the marking and maintenance of coastal waters, inland waterways, and lakes.
• Ability to properly use and store boats and related materials and equipment.
• Ability to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.


Requirements

License
Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform the essential duties of the position.

Residency
All persons newly hired on or after September 1, 2011, have one year from the date of employment to establish, and then maintain principal residence in the State of New Jersey subject to the provisions of N.J.S.A. 52:14-7 (L.2011, Chapter 70), also known as the “New Jersey First Act”.

Authorization to Work
