The WRM Program also regulates and manages the diversion of water from surface and groundwaters to ensure protection of the resource, and provides low cost financial assistance for finance capital improvements to water infrastructure. The Program works to ensure adequate, reliable, sustainable supplies for current and future needs, uses, and the environment.

Project Description:  This will allow for the Department to have up-to-date and accurate information on NJ saline waters. The Bureau of Environmental Analysis, Restoration, and Standards is updating the SWQS GIS layer to be consistent with recently released National Hydrography Datasets. As a result of this GIS review, the Department is interested in re-examining watersheds where both FW2-NT/SE1 and SE1 classifications are found intermingling in our waters. In these situations, the intern would assess whether employing one classification would be accurate. The Head of Tide polygons used in the previous SWQS GIS will require thorough analysis.

Specific to the Position: As part of this effort, the intern will assist in downloading salinity data from the Water Quality Portal, reviewing QAPPs, and generating a new GIS coverage of waters that exceed the saline criteria. The intern will also work to catalogue these changes for SWQS and our water quality assessment station lookup table for assembling the Integrated Report.

Preferred Area of Study: Seeking individuals enrolled at an accredited university/college studying one of the physical, biological, or environmental sciences, geographic information systems/mapping, or environmental policy. Proficiency with Microsoft Excel and Word, and ArcGIS Pro is mandatory. Good writing and organization skills preferred.
