Scope of Eligibility
Open to permanent employees who work for the Division of Science and Research and meet the requirements below.

Description
Under general supervision of a division director or other supervisory official in a state department, institution, or agency, independently initiates and coordinates research or developed program in a specified professional field; may supervise lower levels of Research Scientists and other technical staff, manages high level technical projects and reports results to designated officials for inter- and intra-agency response; does related work.

Specific to the Position
Within the Division of Science and Research, Bureau of Risk Analysis, this candidate will supervise staff and conduct focused human health-based studies involving toxicology and risk assessment. The research needs include independently conducting or evaluating qualitative and quantitative human health toxicity and risk assessments and reviewing relevant scientific literature to support the development of criteria and standards for toxic chemicals. This person will evaluate health impacts of existing and emerging environmental conditions and contaminants and manage and participate in research on human health exposure and associated hazards. This scientist will advise on the use of scientific information in policy decisions, represent the DEP on external committees, and participate in the Division's management of the NJDEP Science Advisory Board.

Preferred Skill Set
Special consideration will be given to candidates with knowledge of research methods relevant to assessment of risks of environmental contaminants, derivation of toxicity factors, and skills in interpreting & presenting results. Experience in human risk assessment of NJ-relevant historical and emerging contaminants would be a plus. The ability to plan, organize, and direct the work of other research scientists is critical.


Requirements
EDUCATION:

Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Master's degree in a discipline appropriate to the position.

EXPERIENCE:
Four (4) years of full-time experience in a field appropriate to the position.

NOTE: A Doctorate in a discipline appropriate to the position may be substituted for two (2) years of experience indicated above.

License
Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform the essential duties of the position.
