Program: Contaminated Site Remediation and Redevelopment – Staff Engagement Team

Program Description: The Contaminated Site Remediation & Redevelopment (CSRR) program at the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP) ensures the cleanup and safe reuse of contaminated sites across the state. Within CSRR, the Staff Engagement Team (SET) promotes communication, professional development, and staff involvement, while supporting outreach initiatives that connect employees and stakeholders to the program’s mission.

Project Description: As a CSRR Intern, you will support the Staff Engagement Team (SET) in advancing initiatives that improve staff engagement, communications, and program support. This role blends creative content development, event planning, and organizational tasks, giving you hands-on experience in communication, project management, and stakeholder engagement within a large environmental program.

Specific to the Position:
  • Develop 13+ Bureau factsheets by interviewing Bureau Chiefs and staff, drafting content, designing the web layout, and finalizing/posting the information.
  • Assist with SET newsletters (Quarter 1 and Quarter 2) by developing content and designing visuals in Canva.
  • Support event planning for Take Your Kid to Work Day (TYKTWD) and Earth Day by helping design and coordinate site remediation activities.
  • Contribute to the Youth Inclusion Initiative (YII) by assisting in the creation of a Site Remediation Class for peer learning.
  • Help develop Peer Link, a program to strengthen connections among CSRR staff.
  • Provide web design and data entry support to improve access to information.
  • Assist CSRR’s Training Committee in creating training materials for stakeholders on remediation topics.

What would a day look like as a Bureau of Program Development Intern?
  • Interviewing a Bureau Chief or staff member to draft a fact sheet.
  • Writing and designing newsletter content in Canva.
  • Preparing for an upcoming staff or public outreach event.
  • Collaborating with CSRR staff to support Youth Inclusion Initiative or Peer Link projects.
  • Updating web content or organizing data for program efficiency.
  • Participating in meetings to learn how CSRR supports remediation and redevelopment efforts statewide.

Preferred Interests:
  • Interest in environmental remediation, internal communications, and staff engagement.
  • Strong writing skills with an ability to translate technical information into clear content.
  • Experience or comfort with Canva, web editing, and design.
  • Detail-oriented, organized, and capable of handling multiple projects.

License: Appointee will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform the essential duties of the position.

Residency: All persons newly hired on or after September 1, 2011, have one year from the date of employment to establish, and then maintain principal residence in the State of New Jersey subject to the provisions of N.J.S.A. 52:14-7 (L.2011, Chapter 70), also known as the "New Jersey First Act".
