Description  
Under the close supervision of a Program Specialist 3 or 4, or other supervisory official in a state department, institution or agency, assists in the professional, administrative and analytical work to promote the planning, operation, implementation, monitoring and/or evaluation of various programs and services administered by the Department of assignment; assists in conducting the research and field work necessary to meet the needs of the appropriate state and/or local public or private agencies; does other related work. 
 
Specific to the Position 
Work within The Office of Environmental Justice’s community relations team to support various work streams including, but not limited to:  

  • Coordinating communications, logistics, outreach, and research on local environmental justice issues for community engagement events and educational seminars  

  • Supporting OEJ’s communications including its bi-weekly newsletter, social media, and website  

  • Building and maintaining relationships with community-based organizations, EJ advocates, and residents across the state, including maintaining an EJ contact list  

  • Distilling complex EJ issues and DEP processes into easy to understand and visually compelling outreach and educational materials  

  • Preparing meeting minutes as needed, including minutes for meetings of the Environmental Justice Advisory Council   

  • Supporting special projects and other work as needed  

  • This position requires occasional work and travel during evenings in the form of staffing evening community meetings. The role may also require occasional work on weekends in the form of staffing weekend community events like conferences and fairs. Flexible schedules are allowed to accommodate for evening and weekend work hours.  

Preferred Skill Set 

  • Experience working collaboratively in teams. 
  • Experience with and/or desire to join a fast-paced work environment.  

  • Ability to coordinate multiple projects simultaneously  

  • Background in Environmental Studies, Urban Planning, Communications, Community Organizing, Event Planning, or related field  

  • Understanding of environmental justice issues and concepts   

Requirements
Bachelor’s degree or four years of professional experience relevant to the position.

License  
Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform the essential duties of the position.

Residency
