Scope of Eligibility
Open to permanent employees who work for the Division of Air Quality and Radiation Protection and meet the requirements below.

Description
Under close supervision of a Radiation Physicist 3 or other supervisory official in the Department of Environmental Protection, performs radiological surveys and inspections; performs standard laboratory procedures to evaluate environmental samples for radioactive concentration; performs environmental sampling and quality assurance associated with radioactively contaminated site decommissioning and environmental sampling associated with radiological assessment of accidents involving radioactive materials and nuclear power electric generating stations; does other related duties as required.

Specific to the Position
Position 1: This position will support oversight of calibration of radiation detection equipment; support planning and implementation of drills/exercises, including biennial FEMA evaluation; support oversight of emergency response vehicles equipped with highly sensitive radiation detection equipment; support training of responders; support review and revision of Standard Operating Procedures for Nuclear Emergency Response; support planning and holding of two annual public hearings.

Position 2:

This position ensures the Bureau of X-ray Compliance meets its statutory mandate under the Radiation Protection Act (26:2D-1) of preventing unnecessary radiation exposure to radiation workers, and the public from medical and industrial x-ray machine sources. And the Radiologic Technologist Act (N.J.S.A. 26:2D-24) by requiring appropriate training and experience of persons operating medical equipment. This position is crucial and essential to the Bureau.

Position 3:
This position is responsible for the following: Licensing and inspection of water treatment facilities, responding to radiological emergencies, participating in nuclear power plant emergency response exercises, conducting site cleanup reviews and confirmatory monitoring, complete training and update training journals, continue to become a fully qualified license reviewer/inspector in Industrial and Decommissioning, and complete continuing education for a fully qualified license reviewer/inspector. The Radiological and Environmental Assessment (REAS) section requires a highly skilled staff with specialized training. It is technically very challenging.

Requirements
EDUCATION:

Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor's degree in Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Engineering, Mathematics, Radiologic Technology, Radiation Science or Environmental Sciences, which includes sixteen (16) semester credit hours in any combination of the following lab-based courses: physics, chemistry, biology or medical imaging.

EXPERIENCE:

Two (2) years of experience in the field of radiological health.

NOTE: A Master's degree in one of the above fields may be substituted for one (1) year of the required experience.

NOTE: A Doctorate in one of the above fields may be substituted for two (2) years of the required experience.

NOTE: All U.S. degrees and transcripts must be from an accredited college or university. All foreign degrees and transcripts must be evaluated for accreditation by a recognized evaluation service by the closing date of this posting. Failure to provide documentation may result in ineligibility.

License
Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform the essential duties of the position.
