Description
Under the general supervision of the Assistant Director of Coastal Resources, Division of Coastal Resources, Department of Environmental Protection, supervises the marking of State navigation channels on the coastal bays and inland waterways of the State and the State's general waterway maintenance program; does related work as required.
Specific to the Position
Supervises the operations of the Aids to Navigation (ATON) unit in the Office of Coastal Engineering including the preparation of budget and personnel needs, requests from the department and monitoring conformance with established guidelines. Maintenance of the unit's 3,400 sf shop and all equipment therein for the repair and maintenance of the buoys and markers.
Preferred Skill Set
This position requires specific knowledge of the waterways of NJ as well as the vessels and equipment used to mark the channels including the ability to observe, diagnose, and repair said equipment. Strong written and verbal skills required to confer with assigned staff, coordinate with office staff on procurement and installation schedules, and coordinate with outside agencies.
Requirements
Four years of experience in the navigation of coastal waters and/or inland lakes, including at least one year supervisory experience in the navigation of powered vessels.
Possession of a valid Boat Operator's License issued by the United States Coast Guard.
License
Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform the essential duties of the position.
