Description
Under the supervision of a Principal Environmental Technician, Supervising Environmental Technician, Environmental Engineer, Scientist, or other supervisory official in a state department, institution, or agency, performs semi-skilled and technical engineering or investigation and inspection work in an environmental program; does other related duties as required.
Specific to the Position
This Environmental Technician (ET) position will perform technical investigation work in NJ marine waters as well as work to protect and conserve shellfish waters. Duties include operating and maintaining vessels/motors, navigating waters, securing water and/or shellfish samples, properly maintaining samples, operating vehicles and transporting the samples to the laboratory, and data entry. The ET must participate in field studies and set up, test, operate, calibrate and maintain specialized control and testing equipment, and use recording devices and measuring instruments at designated monitoring sites. Knowledge of sampling techniques and the laws, rules, regulations, methods, and techniques pertinent to safe navigation is required. Knowledge of factors which influence the judgment of water and weather conditions, and the ability to follow safety rules and precautions is also required.
Preferred Skill Set
Preference given to candidates who possess a current Boat Safety Certificate (more advanced US Coast Guard licenses may be substituted) and driver's license valid in New Jersey.
Ability to use and work from a small boat. Ability to navigate inland and coastal waters and safety rules and practices for boat handling. Knowledge of environmental investigations and sampling techniques.
Requirements
Education:
Appointees will be required to provide verification of the satisfactory completion of one or more course in mathematics (algebra, trigonometry, geometry, pre-calculus or calculus) AND one or more course in science (physics, chemistry, environmental, or biological) required in various
high school level college preparatory curriculum.
NOTE: Semester hour credits from an accredited college or university in subject areas identical to, or closely related to, the high school coursework identified above will be accepted towards meeting the educational requirement.
NOTE: All U.S. degrees and transcripts must be from an accredited college or university. All foreign degrees and transcripts must be evaluated for accreditation by a recognized evaluation service by the closing date of this posting. Failure to provide documentation may result in ineligibility.
Experience:
One (1) year of experience performing field inspections, investigations, and surveys, operating control and testing equipment, recording devices and measuring instruments, and/or providing technical support to an Environmental Scientist, Environmental Specialist, or Environmental Engineer.
NOTE: Thirty (30) semester hour credits from an accredited college or university, which shall have included at least twenty-one (21) semester credit hours in any combination of natural, chemical, environmental, biological, or engineering sciences, may be substituted for one (1) year of work experience.
License
Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform the essential duties of the position.
