Hourly Rate: $18 per hour

Program: Water Resources Management – Bureau of Safe Drinking Water

Program Description: The Bureau of Safe Drinking Water at the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP) helps ensure that public water systems provide safe and reliable drinking water. Staff review water system designs, evaluate capacity, and make sure systems meet state and federal rules.

Project Description: As a Safe Drinking Water Intern, you will provide support to supervisors and staff in the Engineering Section. This role is designed to give you an introduction to how drinking water systems are reviewed and regulated.

Specific to the Position:
  • Assist staff with organizing and reviewing project files.
  • Help enter and track information in databases.
  • Shadow staff during reviews of engineering plans and water system information.
  • Provide general office support such as scanning, filing, and preparing materials.

What would a day look like as a Bureau of Program Development Intern?
  • Learning the basics of how public water systems are regulated.
  • Helping your supervisor keep project information organized and up to date.
  • Sitting in on discussions about drinking water projects and compliance.
  • Supporting staff with data entry and document preparation.
Preferred Interests:
  • Curious about how drinking water is kept safe for communities.
  • Detail-oriented and willing to help keep information organized.
  • Comfortable using Microsoft Office tools (Word, Excel).
  • Reliable and eager to learn from supervisors and staff.
License: Appointee will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform the essential duties of the position.

Residency: All persons newly hired on or after September 1, 2011, have one year from the date of employment to establish, and then maintain principal residence in the State of New Jersey subject to the provisions of N.J.S.A. 52:14-7 (L.2011, Chapter 70), also known as the "New Jersey First Act".

Authorization to Work: Selected candidates must be authorized to work in the United States per the Department of Homeland Security, United States Citizenship and Immigration Services regulations. Note: The State of New Jersey does not provide sponsorship for citizenship to the United States.
